Waste Plastic Film: The Largest Unrecovered Resource Pool

Global annual waste plastic film exceeds 60 million tons, yet recovery rate remains below 15% — technology is the bottleneck

Massive Volume

Global annual agricultural film use exceeds 10 million tons, packaging film exceeds 50 million tons; over 85% ends up landfilled, incinerated, or leaked into the environment

Policy Pressure

EU plastic packaging tax of 800 EUR/ton on non-recycled content; China's plastic ban expanding — disposal costs rising for enterprises, making recycling economically viable

Value Gap

Mixed waste film sells for 500-800 CNY/ton; after sorting purification, LDPE pellets reach 5,000-7,000 CNY/ton — a value increase of 6-10x

Why Is Film Recycling So Difficult?

01

Multi-Layer Composite Materials Everywhere

Modern packaging films are predominantly multi-layer co-extruded structures (e.g., PA/PE, EVOH/PE, PET/PE), making material identification and separation extremely difficult

  • NIR cannot penetrate multi-layer structures
  • Density separation fails for composites
  • Manual sorting is virtually impossible
02

Severe Contamination

Post-consumer films carry soil, organic residues, labels, and adhesives. High contamination not only affects sorting but also damages recycling equipment

  • High moisture content causes equipment clogging
  • Organic residues degrade recycled pellet quality
  • Extensive pre-cleaning increases costs
03

Unfavorable Economics

Low bulk density of films (30-50 kg/m³) makes transportation expensive; high sorting costs cause recycled pellets to exceed virgin material prices, limiting market acceptance

  • Transport cost accounts for 20-30% of recycling cost
  • Traditional sorting cost 800-1,200 CNY/ton
  • Recycled pellets priced 10-20% above virgin material

Advantages Over Traditional Film Sorting

Penetrates Surface Contaminants

SWIR hyperspectral penetrates surface dirt, labels, and printing inks to identify true material composition — unaffected by appearance contamination

Identifies Multi-Layer Composites

Unique spectral fingerprint technology identifies multi-layer composite film structures (PA/PE, EVOH/PE) that conventional NIR cannot detect

Film-Optimized Throughput

Specially designed wide-belt system handles low-density films at 2-5 tons/hour, 3x the throughput of conventional sorting machines for films

Ultra-Low Operating Cost

Fully automated operation with sorting cost below 150 CNY/ton, 80% lower than manual sorting costs (800-1,200 CNY/ton)

Wide Material Adaptability

Covers agricultural film, packaging film, stretch film, shrink film, and more — one machine handles multiple materials with one-click switching

Modular Scalable Design

Modular architecture supports single-unit or multi-unit parallel operation; easily scale capacity from 2 tons/hour to 20+ tons/hour

Frequently Asked Questions

Can hyperspectral sorting handle heavily soiled agricultural films?

Yes. SWIR hyperspectral can penetrate moderate surface contamination. We recommend pre-washing to remove heavy soil (reducing contamination to <5%), then hyperspectral sorting for precise material identification. The system also includes an automatic cleaning module for the optical window to handle dust.

How do you handle multi-layer composite films?

Multi-layer composites have unique spectral characteristics. Our AI model has been trained on common composite structures (PA/PE, EVOH/PE, PET/PE, etc.) and can identify and separate them. Composites are typically directed to dedicated chemical recycling or downcycling streams.

What is the minimum throughput for economic viability?

We recommend a minimum annual capacity of 2,000 tons. Below this, equipment costs may not provide adequate ROI. For smaller operations, we offer shared-facility models or mobile sorting service options — please contact us for details.

How does film moisture affect sorting?

Excessive moisture (>15%) can cause films to clump and affect spreading uniformity. We recommend controlling moisture to <10% before sorting. Our system includes an optional pre-drying module and the optical system has anti-fog design.
